The splints for Redheads® Safety Matches are made from Aspen Timber (populous tremaloides). This timber is native to Scandinavia and the Baltic region. Little or no planting of Aspen is carried out since Aspen naturally propagates very easily and quickly establishes itself compared to other timbers.

Australian Packaging Covenant (APC)

Since 1st of August 2007, Redheads® has volunteered to become a signatory of the Australian Government’s APC. The Covenant is designed to minimize the environmental impacts arising from the disposal of used packaging, conserve resources through better design and production processes and facilitate the re-use and recycling of used packaging materials.

As part of APC Signatories, Redheads® have developed action plans to reduce the environmental effects of packaging on the environment.

In helping to create a more sustainable environment, Redheads® products and packaging are sourced from sustainable raw materials, recycled materials and with reduced energy consumption, where possible.

The plastic used to wrap Redheads® Handy Pack and Extra Long Safety Matches is made from polypropylene (PP), the preferred material for most European markets.

The plastic is much thinner than paper, hence the quantity used is small. This reduces not only the raw material cost, but also the disposal costs under the EU directive on Packaging Ware. PP is also one of the most environmentally safe plastics since it is easily recycled and burns cleanly without producing toxic fumes.
